The Project for the Restoration and Development of the Murteiras Archaeological Site

The Recuperation and Valorization Murteiras Project

The Eugénio de Almeida Foundation has been promoting the preservation, restoration and development of its built heritage of notable architectural, artistic, historical or archaeological value, most of which is classified, making them available to the general public.

The main objectives of the Foundation's intervention in this field are to preserve significant historical, artistic and cultural resources and to offer the public an opportunity to use these resources, fundamental for the restoration and development of elements that create the memory and form the cultural identity of the region.

This was the context in which the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation submitted the project “Restoration and Development of the Herdade das Murteiras Archaeological Site” to the Operational Programme for Culture.

This Project opened to the public the Neolithic Settlement of Murteiras and its associated funerary monuments, an archaeological complex with unique features in the context of prehistoric settlements.

Surrounded by landscape of a singular and characteristic beauty, Herdade das Murteiras, owned by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, is one of the largest known Neolithic settlements in the region.
